ENTRY No. 004 / VIDEOS / 2001

All Your Base Are Belong to Us

A broken translation that became the internet's first shared inside joke.

The origin

The line comes from the opening of the shoot-em-up Zero Wing, whose English localisation for the 1991 Sega Mega Drive release rendered the villain's speech as broken English.

How it spread

In the early 2000s an animated version set the text to music and spliced the phrase into photographs of signs, billboards and packaging, spreading it well beyond gaming forums.

What it means

An early demonstration that a meme needs no author and no punchline, only a phrase strange enough to repeat.
