ENTRY No. 014 / REACTIONS / 2005

O RLY?

An owl, and two syllables of pure sarcasm.

The origin

A photograph of a snowy owl was captioned with an abbreviated 'Oh, really?' and used to answer obvious statements.

How it spread

It became a standard forum reply, and by 2006 was widespread enough that a computer worm printed the owl on office printers.

What it means

One of the first reaction images in the modern sense: a picture used in place of a sentence.
