ENTRY No. 005 / FORMATS / 2001

Tourist Guy

A hoax photo from 2001 that taught the web to distrust photographs.

The origin

Hungarian tourist Péter Guzli altered his own 1997 photograph from the World Trade Center observation deck to add an approaching aircraft, and sent it to friends.

How it spread

It escaped privately and circulated worldwide as a supposedly real image before being debunked; he was later identified.

What it means

An early lesson in digital forgery, and in how fast a private joke stops being private.
